EMI training is a training specifically tailored for teaching in English. It is designed to support university teachers in mastering new skills and implementing teaching methodologies adapted to the international environment in English, with a particular emphasis on innovative teaching methods (e.g. working in group and classroom environments, encouraging student interaction, strategies for approaching students of different nationalities and native languages, etc.). The training is not aimed at improving general language competences, but at the specialized area of English as a Medium of Instruction, i.e. using English as the language of instruction.
The training is open to lecturers who are actively engaged in teaching at one of the four largest universities in Serbia (University of Belgrade, University of Novi Sad, University of Nís, University of Kragujevac) and who possess the knowledge of the English language at a level of B2 or higher. Participants are required to already have language skills at the indicated level before applying for the training, since during the training they will be expected to employ these skills and practice their usage for innovative ways of working with students.
A public call for training applications intended for teachers wanting to teach in the English language is published once a year. The call itself lists the application deadline on a yearly basis. More information about the current call and application deadlines can be found in the How to apply section.
The training is intended for teachers from the four largest state universities in Serbia in all educational-scientific, or educational-artistic fields, apart from the specific study field of English language (and English linguistics/literature). Candidates must be formally affiliated with the university, i.e. with the faculties within the university, and must have a certain minimal amount of involvement in teaching.
The training is conducted by a team of English language professors from the faculties of philology or philosophy from four of the largest universities in Serbia. These teams of lecturers participated in joint training with foreign experts in the field of English as the language of instruction, from the universities of Oxford and Southampton (United Kingdom), as well as the University of Arizona (United States of America). During these training sessions, the EMI training program was designed and developed, which is implemented in similar forms and with equal outcomes at all four universities.
Participation in the training is free of charge, and participants will be provided with work materials. The training will be conducted in the teachers’ university premises (Belgrade, Novi Sad, Niš and Kragujevac).
Unfortunately, there is no possibility of applying after the public call has closed, since the interest for the training is high and the number of applicants is many times greater than the number of available places within the training.
The project foresees that the training will be held in person, as this ensures that its outcomes are fully achieved.
